The initial stage of the blood banking process is the testing of the donation, prior to its storage. It is a mandatory part, as the blood supplied must be later on transferred to someone in need on perfectly healthy body fluids. Tests done vary from multiple points of view. There are general tests that must be carried out and some which are only done in case of suspicions or in times when there are more viruses in the particular location. These checkups are mandatory for the unit, but they can also be requested by the person donating the blood, if they want to know if they are healthy and they have done some good for the society in the proper way.
Tests made are first of all general. They are just like the ones any normal person would get on a regular medical checkup. The parameters of the blood cells and of all the other constitutive elements are processed slowly and individually, so that nothing is left out of the process. Elements of the blood should be in the levels of the normal functions. This means that there are normal parameters in which these should be entered. If there are signs of abnormality or if the parameters are overstepped, then the issue must be verified in order to find the source. Blood that is not perfectly healthy and that has a small issue in any way is immediately rejected. Special tests are also carried out on the blood supplies. These look out for the samples containing various viruses such as HIV or Hepatitis.
If the donated supply of blood is healthy, than the most important thing is to have it categorized by blood group and have it stored properly. The testing part of the blood banking process, prior to the storage, is the one that can determine the actual storage or the disposal of the blood. Since the donated amounts are to be given to people who have various health problems and most of the time to those that have lost blood during an injury or are operated on, then the donated blood must be absolutely perfect. Therefore, people who feel like they may have a health issue of any kind, should not try blood banking donations, as this could be affected in many ways even by a simple cold.

Blood transfusions are an important part of the system of blood banking. In fact, assuring the needed resources for transfusions is the main reason why blood is collected and preserved in blood banks. Through blood transfusions, blood products are administrated to patients. Reasons why patients may need blood transfusions vary from one case to another, the most emergent ones being the situations in which accidents have taken place resulting in the forming of hemorrhages. The main purpose of blood transfusions remains however replacing lost blood components. In this context it is important to mention that unlike the early stages of transfusions, nowadays the process no longer uses whole blood, but only blood components. The blood components that can be used nowadays include red blood cells, white blood cells, but also plasma and clotting factors.
